Survey Focuses on Hospital System and Private Equity Investments in Physician Practices

Clinic Service, a leading Denver-based medical biller, today announced it is surveying medical practices to learn about their experiences with, and attitudes toward, the purchase of medical practices by hospital systems and private equity funds.

“Hospital systems and private equity funds are buying specialty medical practices at an increasing rate,” said Michael Kuehn, Vice President of Operations at Clinic Service. “We want to learn how this trend is impacting medical practices and medicine in general.”

About 42 percent of physicians worked for hospital systems by mid-2016, up from about 26 percent four years earlier, according to a study by Avalere Health. The same study found hospitals purchased 5,000 physician practices and newly employed 14,000 physicians between July 2015 and July 2016 alone, an 11 percent increase in just one year.

“We know from our conversations with our physician practice clients that these medical practice acquisitions can be quite disruptive to the delivery of care, and to the practices’ bottom lines,” Kuehn said. “We’re interested in getting a more formal read on exactly how this wave of acquisitions is impacting the market, and especially the physicians whose practices are being purchased.”

Participants in the Clinic Service Medical Practice Acquisitions Survey will be entered to win a $100 Amazon gift card. To submit your own survey entry, and to be entered to win the gift card, go to [survey ended 10/1/2018]. Survey respondents must be either a physician or nurse working in a medical practice or a medical practice manager.

The Denver Post Names Clinic Service a Winner of the Colorado 2017 Top Workplaces Award

For the fifth year in a row, Clinic Service has been awarded a 2017 Top Workplaces honor by the Denver Post. The Top Workplaces lists are based solely on the results of an employee feedback survey administered by WorkplaceDynamics, LLC, a leading research firm that specializes in organizational health and workplace improvement. Several aspects of workplace culture were measured, including Alignment, Execution, and Connection, just to name a few.

“The Top Workplaces award is not a popularity contest. And oftentimes, people assume it’s all about fancy perks and benefits.” says Doug Claffey, CEO of WorkplaceDynamics. “But to be a Top Workplace, organizations must meet our strict standards for organizational health. And who better to ask about work life than the people who live the culture every day—the employees. Time and time again, our research has proven that what’s most important to them is a strong belief in where the organization is headed, how it’s going to get there, and the feeling that everyone is in it together. Claffey adds, “Without this sense of connection, an organization doesn’t have a shot at being named a Top Workplace.”

Clinic Service has been serving the medical community for more than 40 years. Nearly 30 percent of employees have worked for Clinic Service for over 10 years, and its average tenure is eight years.

“Positive workplace culture leads to increased productivity, better employee morale and the ability to keep skilled workers. We’re proud to have a company culture that stresses empowerment, respect and humanity,” said CEO Andrew Graham. “In the end, it’s a win-win for our employees and our clients.”

CEO Andrew Graham as featured in PROSPER! South Metro Denver Chamber News & Events

“I have two decades of experience, presently owning and operating a medical management business in Denver. I think there is no difference between leadership and education. My passion is to build people who think they can’t into people who do.

“People need boots, not just bootstraps. It is a leader role to create opportunities for people to succeed, but I also firmly believe those people must also have the personal responsibility for putting the work in to take full advantage of those opportunities. This all then boils down to building organizational cultures where people have the direction to do what is needed, the skills to get it done, the tools to be effective, and a place where they are empowered and accountable. Now given the vision, they can grow, excel, and perform.

“This mindset is why our company was rated the 7th Best Medium Size Company to Work in Denver in 2011. Aside from work, I am an active leader in my Son’s Cub Scout Pack and spend a good deal of my time promoting the ideals of Scouting. I am an avid reader, hack musician, and dedicated Rockies fan. I have a wicked sense of humor and tend to see the lighter side of most situations.

“[The most effective way to build a relationship with a client is] …earned trust backed by results. I always seek to present myself authentically and always play with a clean deck. I say what I genuinely think, for better or worse. When meeting a new prospect/client, I first seek to learn what they are seeking to achieve and determine if what they request is in my wheel house. If it is, I then share my background and experience that relates to what they are trying to achieve. I then discuss my ideas and capabilities to help them, all the while seeking to build a rapport that will ensure a good working relationship. I then cultivate the long-term relationship by doing what I said/agreed to and actively communicating with the client as often as possible or as is required.

“Clinic Service exists to maximize the financial return for a community of medical providers through medical billing, EMR implementation, and physician practice management consulting. We maintain consistent hustle and high expectations. Our workplace is an inclusive, fun, results-oriented, stimulating learning environment that is true to our ever-growing capabilities. We reward performance, continuous improvement, and personal accountability. Through open and honest communication, we develop our people to responsibly apply skill and knowledgeable thought to all aspects of our strengths and specialty. Most importantly, we care, and lead the market because of it.”

Clinic Service’s software solution, C-Suite, was approved for meaningful use by The Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  It was evaluated using regulatory criteria related to the efficiency, relevance, and security of patient health information.   Medical professionals are assured compliance with continually changing regulations in the medical billing field.

Medical practices can also benefit from the practice management solution integrated with C-Suite software, assisting with increasing revenue in every aspect of the practice.  With this feature, and the compliance of the Clinic Service’s software solution, C-Suite, the partnership between DrFirst and Clinic Service will provide benefits for both sides.

Clinic Service C-Suite Electronic Health Record (EMR) solution is approved as a designated provider by the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO)

(Denver, CO November 10, 2011) Clinic Service Corporation (CSC), a medical billing and practice management firm, has been designated an approved provider for Electronic Heath Record solutions by the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO) for their Clinic Service C-Suite Electronic Medical Record (EMR) software solution.

In February 2010, CORHIO received federal grants for both Health Information Exchange and a Regional Extension Center for their commitment to proactively engage EHR vendors to better equip physicians in Colorado to make informed decisions about HIT products that would enable them to achieve meaningful use.

As a COHRIO approved EHR solution, Clinic Service was required to meet criteria in five core areas in the CORHIO/CO-REC review process: Corporate and Financial Strength, Competitive Pricing, Health Information Exchange (HIE) Connectivity, HL7 Messaging and Continuity of Care Document (CCD) Exchange.

In additional to interoperability requirements, CORHIO and CO-REC required  that Clinic Service and other EHR vendors demonstrate a commitment to advancing EHR adoption to all physicians in Colorado, not limited to the providers eligible for Regional Extension Center (REC) services. As the stages of Meaningful Use progress over the next four years, CORHIO is committed to having 85% of all Colorado providers meaningfully using an EHR. Clinic Service Corporation received approval status based on a set of 10 technical integration points, interface availability and pricing, overall system pricing and current ONC-ATCB certification.

In May 2011, the Clinic Service C-Suite EHR received Meaningful Use Certification, a federal designation granted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.  This certification means the software as a solution (SaaS) product meets all regulatory criteria relating to the efficiency, relevance, and security of patient health information utilized by medical professionals.

The primary benefit of utilizing the C-Suite EMR is in its ease of use.  “From day one we wanted to create an EMR solution that is as easy to use as Yahoo,” said Andrew Graham, CEO of Clinic Service. We kept our focus on finding simple ways to help doctors capture the patient information they need, while at the same time embedding code to capture the data public health organizations want. The Meaningful Use designation means any medical professional using our system can be assured they have the tools to be compliant with ever-changing regulations.” The C-Suite EMR solution is also affordable. Medical practices use the solution on a unique “pay-per-use” basis, which allows any physician to begin using EMR software immediately.  Our core business has always been ensuring physicians and medical office administrators can accelerate their workflow and maximize their profit by utilizing our back-office services,” Graham says. “We want doctors to stay focused on providing great medical care.”

Medical Practices Will Get Incentive or Penalty as Deadline Approaches for Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) ERx

(Denver, CO June 24, 2011) The deadline for qualifying for the electronic-prescription (eRx) incentive monies and avoiding penalties from a medical professional’s Medicare Part B Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) is June 30, 2011. At the end of June, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will stop considering the claims they receive from practices for eRx incentive and penalty payments to be rendered and imposed in 2012. Before the end of June, a practice must submit at least ten eRx using a CMS-qualified eRx service and report it to CMS to qualify for incentives of an additional 1% of the physician’s PFS. Penalties for not complying with the eRx criteria of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (2008), or MIPPA, begin in 2012 at 1% of PFS and increase by half percent each year through 2014.

An eRx benefits doctors, payers, and patients by avoiding errors and cost associated with paper prescriptions by implementing IT; eRx facilitates better patient care also by enabling doctors to access insurance information and work with a patient’s out-of-pocket cost of drugs, offering therapeutically viable alternatives.

The eRx legislation resembles that of the electronic medical record (EMR), and though the applications are often incorporated, a doctor doesn’t need one in order to have the other: “Medical Practices don’t need to be using an EMR to avoid these penalties or qualify for the incentive,” says Andrew Graham, CEO of Clinic Service. “Clinic Service is helping physicians start e-prescribing immediately so they can avoid losing thousands of dollars in penalties and qualify to get a 1% increase in reimbursement incentive payments.” To help practices better understand the eRx process and implications, Clinic Service recently posted an article on their website, “ERx: An Overview of Incentives, Penalties, and Exemption.”

Clinic Service C-Suite Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Solution is Granted Meaningful Use Certification by Department of Health and Human Services

(Denver, CO May 9, 2011)Clinic Service Corporation (CSC), a medical billing and practice management firm, announced their C-Suite Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solution received Meaningful Use Certification. The federal designation is granted by the U.S.

“We kept our focus on finding simple ways to help doctors capture the patient information they need, while at the same time embedding code to capture the data public health organizations want. The Meaningful Use designation means any medical professional using our system can be assured they have the tools to be compliant with ever-changing regulations.”

The C-Suite EMR solution is not just easy to use, it is affordable. The C-Suite EMR is a SaaS software solution that utilizes the cloud to ensure its ease of use. Graham added, “Hardware wears out, at minimum it needs maintenance, and things inevitably go wrong. Our clients don’t want to deal with IT at all. All they need is Internet access. By eliminating the need for any IT work out of the gate, we are saving practices tens of thousands of dollars in infrastructure cost. We have also priced the C-Suite solution on a unique ‘pay-per-use’ basis which allows any practice to begin using EMR software immediately.”

“Our core business has always been ensuring physicians and medical office administrators can accelerate their workflow and maximize their profit by utilizing our back-office services,” Graham says. “We want doctors to stay focused on providing great medical care.”
